NTT IndyCar Series championship leader Josef Newgarden of Team Penske heads into the season finale Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey on September 22 well placed to claim his second championship win.
The Tennessee native is currently 41 points ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi who is in second while Simon Pagenaud is in third.
Newgarden knows that all he has to do is finish ahead of Alexander Rossi and Simon Pagenaud and he will be champion.
“It would be nice if (the finale) wasn’t double points, but it is and we knew that from the start of the season. “We will have to make the most of it. I don’t think it will be easy.”
Newgarden just needs to finish fourth regardless of what happens with the other drivers.
Newgarden has four wins and two NTT P1 Awards this year and as a result will claim his second Astor Cup in any tie breaker situations.
The Tennessee native says he wish he had a larger points gap but whatever happens the championship decider is going to be cracking.
