Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has confirmed that earlier this week the company took up their option on Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz Jr meaning that the Spaniard will remain with the Italian team for the 2017 season.
Speaking ahead of their home race in Austria this weekend Horner commented by saying:
“We took up his option earlier this week, so he is committed to Red Bull for an extra 12 months, As with all the drivers they are contracted to Red Bull Racing, and then we have the ability to place them where we want. He is currently at Toro Rosso, which is where he will be next year.
The announcement means that Ferrari will not be able to sign the 21 year old Spaniard as a potential replacement for Kimi Raikkonen who is out of contract at the end of the current season.
Horner has also confirmed that at Red Bull Racing their drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are locked into contracts until the end of 2017.
