McLaren Racing’s Lando Norris claimed his first ever Formula One pole position for the Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi circuit with a time of 01:41.993s.

I don’t know what to say, a manic session, I am extremely happy. It was tricky and I wasn’t confident we could improve but the risk was worth it. I am a happy boy.

Carlos Sainz will make his first front row start in second place behind his old teammate while Williams Racing’s George Russell starts the race from third.

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton crashed in the pit-lane and spun and was unable to get temperatures in his tyres and starts the race from fourth.

Daniel Ricciardo starts the race from fifth just ahead of Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas.

Lance Stroll starts the race from eighth place just ahead of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. Sebastian Vettel starts 11th just ahead of Scuderia Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda.

Nicholas Latifi starts the race from 14th just ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Mick Schumacher. Antonio Giovinazzi starts the race from 17th just ahead of Nicholas Latifi while Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen round out the grid.
