Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon says that he hopes the No.9 NTT Data Honda crew are heading in the right direction.
The New Zealander is currently first on the time-sheets with just over an hour to go on day 3 of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.
Dixon said that it is too early to measure their progress against the Chevrolet powered team’s and for them the goal is to get the car comfortable for Fast Friday and he is hopeful they can chase for the pole this weekend.
Dixon said that today doesn’t mean anything due to the conditions on track with the gusty winds.
Dixon said that the engine mileage doesn’t play a factor but that tire management is the biggest deal. He confirmed the team are on set five for the week. Dixon said that the switch to Honda has made big gains and that it is probably one of the best starts to a season he has had.
The Iceman feels that the Honda aero kit is decent and that the numbers show that it’s the best kit to have of the Speedway.
The team were trying to get some tools to use later in the week and the stuff they did today will help later in the week.
Dixon says that Alonso has a fantastic shot and he will have no issue with qualifying and that he has been great right out of the gate. He feels that Alonso has a great shot next weekend.
Dixon said that winning a second Indy 500 this season is the goal the team are in the business of winning.
Indianapolis doesn’t owe him anything he stated during a press conference on Wednesday. Dixon said having his family at the race track is fun and that there is a great family vibe in the Verizon IndyCar Series.
Dixon’s speed so far today is 222.599mph which sees him lead the pack having completed 47 laps.
