Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Simon Pagenaud attended the 2017 ESPY’s on Wednesday night where the Team Penske driver was nominated in the Best Driver category.
Pagenaud was up again NHRA star Ron Cappes, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, Jimmie Johnson from NASCAR and Martin Truex Jr for the award.
Pagenaud had a plenty of support from within the Verizon IndyCar Series with his dog Norman also getting involved as his campaign manager. The Frenchman enjoyed an extremely close battle with his Penske team mate Will Power in the battle for the championship with Pagenaud taking the championship victory at the season ending Grand Prix of Sonoma.
When it came to the Espy award for Best driver, it was the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s three time world champion Lewis Hamilton who took home the award. However despite the rest of the Formula One grid being in London for the F1 London Live event on Wednesday evening, Hamilton opted out of the event instead opting to take a two day holiday ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix.
Next up for Pagenaud and the Verizon IndyCar Series is the Honda Indy Toronto in Canada this weekend.
