The No.22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet of series points leader Simon Pagenaud took the P1 Award for the opening race of the Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix of Detroit on Saturday.
Pagenaud set a fastest time in the Firestone Fast Six of 01:14.9166s ending the session just ahead of Helio Castroneves taking his fifth pole position of his career.
Juan Pablo Montoya will start tomorrow’s opening race in third place in the No.2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. It was a great session for the No.5 Arrow Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team as James Hinchcliffe ended the day as the fastest Honda and will start tomorrow’s race from fourth place just ahead of reigning series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.
Carlos Munoz will start the race from sixth place for Andretti Autosport just ahead of Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT Data Chevrolet who was happy with the performance of the car despite just missing out on a place in the Firestone Fast 6.
Charlie Kimball in the No.83 Tresiba® Chevrolet will start the race from eighth place just ahead of Team Penske’s Will Power. Graham Rahal in the No.15 United Rentals Honda rounded out the top ten.
Takuma Sato in the No.14 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing Honda will start the race from 11th place just ahead of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Mikhail Aleshin in the No.7 Honda.
Sebastien Bourdais will start the race from 13th place just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden while Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda will start the race from 15th place on the grid.
Dale Coyne Racing’s Conor Daly will start the race from 16th place just ahead of Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi who will roll off from 17th place.
Max Chilton in the No.8 Gallagher Chevrolet starts the race from 18th place just ahead of Marco Andretti who had a tough day in the No.27 Snapple Honda with Maretti Marelli. Gabby Chaves will start the race from 20th place just ahead of the No.20 Ed Carpenter Racing Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet of Spencer Pigot.
Jack Hawksworth in the No.41 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing Honda rounded out the order in 22nd place. Race 1 takes place on Saturday at 3.30pm.
