The No.22 Team Penske Chevrolet of Simon Pagenaud set the benchmark time during the opening practice on day 2 of the Verizon IndyCar Series test at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday.
The Frenchman completed 63 laps with a fastest time of 19.2884s ending the session just ahead of the Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter who ended second and third respectively.
Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Team Chevrelot was 4th fastest completing 42 laps and ending the session just ahead of Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Chevrolet while Kanaan’s former team mate Marco Andretti ended the session in sixth place in the No.27 Snapple Honda.
Reigning series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Team Chevrolet was seventh fastest just ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in the No.2 Team Penske Chevrolet.
Graham Rahal ended the session in ninth place in his No.15 Steak N’Shake Honda completing 18 laps while Chip Ganassi Racing Team’s Charlie Kimball in the No.83 rounded out the top ten.
Sebastien Bourrdais who was earlier today announced as the driver of the No.11 Team Hydroxycut KVSH Racing Chevrolet.
Carlos Munoz in the No.27 Andretti Autosport Honda was 12th fastest just ahead of the No.5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda of James Hinchcliffe. Gabby Chaves in the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda was 14th fastest just ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing Team’s Max Chilton who ended the session with the No.8 in 15th place.
Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Andretti Autosport Honda was 16th fastest ending the session just ahead of the No.14 of Takuma Sato.
Luca Fillipi was 18th fastest just ahead of the No.18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda of Conor Daly. Jack Hawksworth was 20th in the No.41 AJ Foyt Racing Honda while Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet ended the session at the bottom of the times in 21st place.
