The Phoenix International Raceway held a very special event on Wednesday as organisers of this weekend’s Verizon IndyCar Series Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix along with officials from the series were joined by AJ Foyt, Graham Rahal and Ed Carpenter to unveil the AJ Foyt Champions Trophy that will be presented to the winner of Saturday’s race.

Foyt, owner of AJ Foyt Racing and four time Indianapolis 500 won the inaugural USAC race at PIR in 1964.

Foyt holds a record 67 IndyCar victories and won the series championship seven times. Foyt took his Indianapolis 500 victories as a driver in 1961,64,67 and 1977 and won the IndyCar championship as a team owner in 1998 and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1999.
