Verizon Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Chevrolet led the way in the opening practice session ahead of this weekend’s race action at the Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix of Detroit. Power completed 21 laps with a fastest time of 1.15.0197s ending the morning just ahead of Penske team mate Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Hitachi Chevrolet.
Reigning series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chevrolet was third fastest just ahead of current points leader Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet.
James Hinchcliffe who took the pole position last weekend for the Indianapolis 500 was the leading Honda powered car in the No.5 Arrow Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry. Hinchcliffe completed 25 laps and ended the session just ahead of Graham Rahal in the No.15 United Rentals Honda.
Sebastien Bourdais in the No.11 Team Hydroxycut was 7th fastest just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden who in turn was ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti in the No.27 Snapple/Magnetti Marelli Honda.
Carlos Munoz in the No.26 Magnetti Marelli Andretti Autosport Honda rounded out the top ten completing 23 laps.
ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing’s Takuma Sato was 11th fastest in the No.14 Honda ending the session just ahead of Mikhail Aleshin in the No.7 Doom SMP Racing Honda who missed the final ten minutes of the session after being penalized.
Juan Pablo Montoya was 13th fastest in the No.2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet just ahead of Charlie Kimball who is back using the No.83 following the Indianapolis 500.
The No.28 DHL Andretti Autosport Honda of Ryan Hunter Reay was 15th fastest just ahead of Dale Coyne Racing’s Conor Daly. Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT DATA Chevrolet was 17th fastest setting a time of 1m 16.9541s completing 20 laps.
Jack Hawksworth was 18th fastest just ahead of Indianapolis 500 champion Alexander Rossi in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts Andretti Autosport Honda.
Gabby Chaves was 20th fastest in the second Dale Coyne Racing Honda while in his first practice with Ed Carpenter Racing Spencer Pigot ended the session in 21st place completing 28 laps of the circuit with Max Chilton in the No.8 Gallagher Chevrolet rounded out the order in 22nd place.
