Verizon Team Penske’s Will Power was the leading driver from Roger ‘The Captain’ Penske’s stable ending the day as the fastest Chevrolet powered car in third place behind the Honda duo of James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter Reay.
Speaking following the session Will Power commented by saying:
Yeah, it was just conditions. Honestly I didn’t change anything on the car and didn’t trim out any more. It was just a matter of picking the right time to go in that line and making sure that you made it, too, that you didn’t go too far back in the line. But yeah, the team picked it perfectly and made it in. So hopefully have a shot tomorrow. I think there’s very fast cars out there and it will be a really good show for the fans.
Helio Castroneves made it into the Fast Nine by ending the session just behind Power in fourth place in the No.3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet.
Series points leader Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet ended the day as the ninth fastest driver just making it into the Fast Nine for Sunday.
Reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya ended the opening day of qualifying for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in 12th place.
