Fresh from signing a new contract with Mercedes, Nico Rosberg ended the opening day of practice ahead of Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix on top of the time sheets setting a fastest time of 01:20.435s with Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo who won here in 2014 in second place.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who has been very vocal in his criticism of the new radio regulations introduced this week was third fastest ending the day ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.
It was a difficult session for reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton who crash heavily in the early part of the afternoon with so much force that the medical alarm in the car was set off however the three time world champion was OK and ended the session in fifth place 1.525s behind Rosberg.
Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari was sixth fastest ending the day just ahead of the McLaren Honda pairing of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. The Sahara Force India Formula One Team’s Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez and Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten.
It was a productive day for the Haas F1 Team’s Esteban Gutierrez who ended the afternoon session in 11th place just ahead of Williams Martini Racing’s Felipe Massa and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz. Valtteri Bottas in the second Williams was 14th fastest just ahead of the Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean.
Daniil Kvyat was 16th fastest for Toro Rosso just ahead of the Renault Sport F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen with the Sauber F1 Team’s Marcus Ericsson in 18th place just ahead of Jolyon Palmer.
Felipe Nasr was 20th for the Sauber F1 Team while Manor Racing’s Pascal Werhlein and Rio Haryanto rounded out the order in 21st and 22nd place respectively.
