The Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team racked up more mileage with the W07 as a number of their rivals struggled with reliability problems on the opening day of the final test at the Barcelona Circuit Du Catalunya in Montmelo.
Nico Rosberg set the fastest time of the day with the German completing 82 laps with a fastest time of 1m 23.022s completing 82 laps before the lunch break. Speaking following his morning in the car Rosberg stated:
It was a decent morning and we’re making progress. It was nice for me to be able to push some more and produce some stronger lap times. We were doing qualifying practice this morning – it’s important to practise that as well. And that’s when it’s all the more enjoyable; taking the car to the limit and really pushing. It’s been a good test, reliability has been good, the speed has been there – it’s all working to plan.
Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton emerged in the W07 just after the lunch break completing 90 laps bring the Brackley based outfit’s total lap tally for the day to 172.
Hamilton ended the session in 6th place with a fastest time of 1m 25.051s. Speaking following the session he commented by saying:
It was a great afternoon of running with great mileage. We did a race simulation and after that I feel I’m ready for race one. The car is feeling great and was consistent all day. It’s been a monumental effort from this team to get the car to where it is today. I’m truly grateful to everyone for every bit of work they have put in so far.
The team will be back in action on Wednesday with Rosberg and Hamilton in action once again.
