Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Nico Rosberg set the fastest time in the opening Free Practice session ahead of Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix. The German a time of 1m 38.037s ending the session just ahead of team mate Lewis Hamilton.
Towards the end of the session, Nico Rosberg had what the team believed was a power unit issue.
Sebastian Vettel was third fastest with a time of 1m 38.665s ending the session just ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was fifth fastest just ahead of Daniil Kvyat in the second Red Bull while Carlos Sainz was seventh fastest for Toro Rosso.
McLaren Honda’s Jenson Button had a great session as he ended the morning with the eighth fastest time just ahead of the Sahara Force India Formula One Team’s Nico Hulkenberg. Max Verstappen rounded out the top ten for Toro Rosso.
Sergio Perez was eleventh fastest in the second Force India while Fernando Alonso who will undergo further medical checks before being cleared to continue this weekend was 12th fastest having completed just five laps, the Spaniard ended the session just ahead of Williams Martini Racing Team’s Valtteri Bottas.
Marcus Ericsson was 14th fastest for the Sauber F1 Team just ahead of the Manor F1 Team’s Rio Haryanto.
Jolyon Palmer was 16th fastest for Renault just ahead of the Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean with Pascal Werhlein 18th, Felipe Nasr rounded out the order in 19th place. Williams Martini Racing Team’s Felipe Massa failed to set a time after suffering what the team believes was a rim failure on his car. The Brazilian suffered two separate failures, both of which are currently under investigation by the team.
Renualt’s Kevin Magnussen suffered a failure of some sort too but at this stage the team are unclear of what it was while Esteban Gutierrez who failed to set a time.
