He has done it. Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi has secured the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series Sunoco rookie of the year award for the season.
Rossi who became the first rookie since Helio Castroneves to win the Indianapolis 500 earlier this year secured the award with a fifth place finish at the season finale GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma (his home race.)
The result was Rossi’s best result since winning the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in the NAPA Auto Parts sponsored No.98 Bryan Herta Autosport Honda.
Rossi holds one of the keys to the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series driver market with a number of teams looking to sign the talented ex-Manor Racing driver. Rossi ended the season in 11th place in the series standings on 430 points.
The Californian ended the season 117 points ahead of Conor Daly in the Sunoco Rookie of the year points classification.
