Alexander Rossi in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts / Curb Honda set the fastest time in Group 1 of practice ahead of qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.
Rossi set a speed of 231.249mph in the curtailed session as a result of overnight rain. The Andretti Autosport driver ended the session just ahead of team mate Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda. Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT Group was third fastest for Chip Ganassi Racing ending up just ahead of the Team Penske pairing of Helio Castroneves and Will Power.
Josef Newgarden in the No.21 Preferred Freezer Services Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet was 6th fastest just ahead of defending Indianapolis 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya in the No.2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.
Defending series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was eighth fastest with Graham Rahal in the No.15 Steak N’Shake Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Team in ninth place with Rahal Letterman Lanigan team mate Spencer Pigot rounding out the top ten.
Max Chilton was 11th fastest despite hitting the wall and bringing out a caution in the No.8 Gallagher Group Chevrolet.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball in the No.42 Tresiba® was 12th fastest just ahead of Takuma Sato in the No.14 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing Team Honda with Sage Karam in 14th place.
Matt Brabham was 15th fastest just ahead of the No.41 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing of Jack Hawksworth.
Stefan Wilson was 17th fastest just ahead of KVSH Racing Team’s Sebastien Bourdais in the No.11 Team Hydroxycut Chevrolet while Buddy Lazier was 19th fastest followed by Alex Tagliani with JR Hildebrand rounding out the session in 21st place.
