Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in the No.27 NAPA Auto Parts Honda led the way in a rather disjointed opening practice session for Saturday night’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park.

The session was delayed due to rain and ended a few minutes early due to more rain with Rossi coming out on top with a fastest speed of 184.424MPH with championship leader Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Bank Honda in second with a 182.773MPH.

Dale Coyne with Vasser Sullivan Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais in the No.18 Team SealMaster Honda was third fastest just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Tony Kanaan.

Ed Jones in the No.10 NTT DATA Honda was fifth fastest just ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot in the No.21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet was seventh fastest just ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach in the No.26 Group 1001 Honda.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe in the No.5 Arrow Electronics Honda was ninth fastest while defending series champion and defending Gateway race winner Josef Newgarden in the No.1 Verizon Team Penske rounded out the top ten with a speed of 180.429MPH.

Newgarden led his Penske team mate’s Will Power, in the sister No.12 Verizon Chevrolet and Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Chevrolet.

Team owner Ed Carpenter in the No.20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet was 13th just ahead of Graham Rahal in the No.15 MiJack Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. On his race return to the team, Gabby Chaves in the No.88 Harding Group Chevrolet was 15th fastest just ahead of Marco Andretti who stopped on track with some sort of mechanical issue but the No.98 crew were able to get him back on track.

Pietro Fittipaldi in the No.19 Paysafe Honda was 17th just ahead of Charlie Kimball in the No.23 Tresiba Chevrolet. Max Chilton was 19th in the No.59 Gallagher Chevrolet for Carlin Racing ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Matheus ‘Matt’ Leist while Takuma Sato rounded out the order in 21st place in the No.30 MiJack/Panasonic Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
