Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team’s Kalle Rovanpera led the way following the shakedown stage of Rally Estonia finishing stage 0.1s ahead of Hyundai Motorsports Craig Breen. M Sport Ford WRC Team’s Teemu Suninen completed the top three while Jari Huttunen was in fourth place in the i20 WRC2. Speaking following Thursday’s action, Breen said:

It has been 10 months since we last competed in the Hyundai Motorsport i20 Coupe WRC on gravel, which was also here in Rally Estonia, but after the first stage this evening, it doesn’t feel like it.

The car is just so enjoyable to drive, the speeds here and the nature of the roads are just sensational. We were 2nd fastest on the opening stage and are only 0.1 of a second off the lead overnight.

There are 8 stages coving over 125km tomorrow, so we hope to get our heads down and do the best job we can for the team!

Mads Ostberg was fifth in the Citroen C3 just ahead of Gus Greensmith in the second M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC. Aleksey Lukyanuk was seventh in the Skoda Fabia Evo in the WRC3 category.

Hyundai Motorsports Ott Tanak and Thierry Neuville struggled on the shakedown as they ended the day in eighth and ninth place respectively. Championship leader Sebastian Ogier rounded out the top ten while his Toyota Gazoo Racing teammate Elfyn Evans ended the day in 19th place.
