Schmidt Peterson Motorsports head into this weekend’s Verizon IndyCar Series season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg with James Hinchcliffe returning to racing for the first time since his huge accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year which ruled him out for the remainder of the season. The Mayor of Hinchtown is fully fit and ready to go racing.

Speaking ahead of the season opener, the Canadian who will once again drive the No.5 Arrow Electronics Honda commented by saying:

This is probably the most excited I’ve ever been for the start of a season. I’m sure that’s not a surprise to anyone, but ten months out of competition is a long time! St. Pete has always been one of my favourite events and this year will be even more special. The team has worked so hard over the offseason, Honda has worked so hard, I’ve worked hard, Arrow is back, there are just so many reasons why this is an exciting weekend for us. I’ve got a lot of friends and family coming out so fingers crossed we can give them something to cheer for!

Hinchcliffe is joined at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports by Mikhail Aleshin who will drive the No.7 SPM Racing Honda. Aleshin will finally get some track time in the No.7 machine having missed the last pre season test following visa problems.

Speaking ahead of the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Aleshin commented by saying:

I’m super excited to be back to IndyCar, driving the No. 7 SMP Racing car again with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. It’s an amazing feeling! I like the track at St. Petersburg and will do my best to score some good points to start the season strong.
