Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team owner Sam Schmidt with the help of one of his primary sponsors Arrow Electronics will drive laps of the Phoenix International Raceway this weekend in the SAM (The Semi-Autonomous Motorcar), a modified 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray.

Schmidt was forced to retire from racing following a testing crash at the Walt Disney World Speedway in preparation for the 2000 season. As a result of the accident, Schmidt is quadriplegic however he is able to drive the Corvette using sip and puff mouth controls which operate the accelerator and brake.

Infrared cameras are used to track his head movements as with the help of Arrow technology Sam can steer the car by turning his head left and right.

Schmidt will be accompanied in the car by a trained able bodied co-driver with separate back up controls. Sam will take to the Phoenix International Raceway later this morning from 11:30 – 12 and again on Saturday at 12.55pm – 1.10pm.
