The Verizon IndyCar Series heads to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on Monday for the opening practice session for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.
Among the highlights of the 33 car field are seven former winners of the race, Juan Pablo Montoya, Alexander Rossi, Ryan Hunter Reay, Buddy Lazier, Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon.
There are two brand new teams participating in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil with the Chevrolet powered Harding Racing fielding Gabby Chaves while the Chevrolet powered Juncos Racing are fielding Spencer Pigot and Sage Karam.
Nineteen of the Verizon IndyCar Series entries for the Indianapolis 500 have won at least one race including Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Chevrolet for Team Penske who won last time out at the IndyCar Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
There are four rookie drivers in the field this year with Andretti Autosport and McLaren partnering to field Fernando Alonso. Michael Shank Racing are fielding Jack Harvey with Andretti Autosport, Ed Jones is making his first Indianapolis 500 start with Dale Coyne Racing while Zach Veach makes his Indianapolis 500 debut as part of a three car AJ Foyt Racing entry.
The 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil takes place on May 28.
