Sergey Sirotkin’s backers SMP Racing have revealed that it was there decision to leave Williams Martini Racing due to a lack of development and results from the Grove based outfit over the course of the 2018 season.

It was announced on Thursday in Abu Dhabi that Robert Kubica will return to Formula One competition for the first time in nine years in 2019 replacing Sergey Sirotkin.

Speaking about the news, the Russian said:

“I was informed from the team yesterday night that its happening, but already last week I had a few talks, a few meetings with SMP Racing.

Sirotkin said he hoped that Williams would have changed their minds about next season but it wasn’t to be.

The Russian felt that he had done enough to to keep his drive but that hasn’t worked out.
