A massive landslide on Tuesday night caused the cancellation of Wednesday’s ninth stage of the 2017 Dakar Rally. Major thunderstorms 160KM from Salta meaning the road to the overnight bivuoc was blocked.
A statement from ASO the organisers of the Dakar Rally said:
According to the Argentinian civil security, victims are deplored in the population and considerable damage has been observed. As the road is cut off, most of the vehicles, competitors, assistance and logistics from the Dakar caravan were diverted on an alternative route through San Antonio de los Cobres, extending the distance of the liaison by about 200 km. They will not be able to reach the Salta bivouac in time to start the race.
The organisers are spending the day ensuring that stage 10 Chilecito and San Juan goes ahead as planned.
Peugeot’s Sebastien Loeb is the overall leader of the rally after winning stage eight on Tuesday.
