Stefan Wilson, the brother of the late Verizon IndyCar Series driver Justin played an instrumental role in enabling Fernando Alonso and McLaren to join Andretti Autosport for the 101st running of Indianapolis 500.
Wilson who drove in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil last year was set to drive for Michael Andretti again this season but stepped aside from the seat.
Wilson along with his sponsors decided that it was best to come to such a decision.
In making the decision to vacate the seat this year, Wilson has guaranteed his place in the for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 in 2018 with the Verizon IndyCar Series ensuring that the Englishman will drive in other races next season and not just the 500.
CEO of Verizon IndyCar Series parent company Hulman and Company, Mark Miles confirmed that the agreement with Stefan Wilson was put in place by all the parties involved.
Although Wilson will not conpete this year he will have a very visible presence at the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil which is just 45 days away.
Miles revealed that Wilson will travel to other Verizon IndyCar Series races this season to promote next year’s Indianapolis 500.
