Williams Racing’s Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams joined the family’s Formula One as press officer in 2002 and worked her way up the ranks within the team and in 2013, after stepping back from the day to day running of the Grove based outfit Sir Frank Williams promoted Claire to the role of Deputy Team Principal.
Claire earned her new title due to her extremely hard work and was rewarded by Sir Frank. In 2013, the team finished in 9th place in the championship on five points.
The 2014 season was massive for the team as they brought in Martini as their new title sponsor while Mercedes became their engine supplier. Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa helped the team to secure third place in the Constructors championship with 320 points having scored nine podium finishes.
Susie Wolff became the first female driver to take part in a Grand Prix weekend since 1992 when she drove in FP1 at the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit.
In 2015, the team once again finished the championship in third place picking up four podium finishes, two each for Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. The team ended the year on 257 points.
The 2016 season saw the team fall down the order slightly finishing the season in fifth place. Valtteri Bottas scored two podium finishes.
In 2017, Lance Stroll made his Formula One debut driving alongside Felipe Massa and Paul Di Resta who drove in place of Massa in Hungary that year.Williams finished the season in fifth place on 83 points, Stroll also scored his first podium in Formula One in Azerbaijan when he finished
The 2018 season saw Sergey Sirotkin replace Felipe Massa as Lance Stroll’s team mate. Stroll picked his first and to date only podium in Azerbaijan when he came home in third place.
In 2019, Williams brought in ROKiT as title sponsor following the departure of Martini while Robert Kubica returned to Formula One to partner with rookie George Russell.
The 2020 season has seen Nicholas Latifi make his race debut with the team alongside George Russell.
Claire Williams has done an incredible job in her role as Deputy Team Principal of Williams Racing and although she says she would have liked better results under her leadership, the team achieved an incredible amount in that time frame ending best of the result in 2014 and 2015.
Claire has also shown other woman that they can succeed in Formula One and she can be extremely proud of the job she has done with the team?
Claire Williams and the team have also helped launch the careers of several successful drivers such as Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll. In an interview with Sky Sports F1HD ahead of her final race with the team this weekend Claire said that she wanted to protect the family’s legacy which she has done but she has also carved her own path and legacy within the team.
Whether you are a fan or not, Claire Williams helped guide the team back to success and although the family’s time in F1 comes to an end in Monza on Sunday, their legacy and success in Formula One will live on for years to come!
