The start of the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge has been delayed here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a severe storm on its way to the circuit.
Once the lightning and the rain passes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NTT INDYCAR SERIES will begin the track drying process. IMS President, J Douglas Boles confirmed on Sunday morning that they have rented Air Titans from NASCAR to aid in the drying of the race track which they expect will take approximately 75 minutes.
In a statement, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said:
A decision has been made to pause pre-race ceremonies. Spectators should follow the instructions of IMS team members. They should exit the grandstands and the Snake Pit and implement their personal safety plans. The start of the Indianapolis 500 will also be delayed. Additional updates on timing will be communicated.
Fans who decide to leave the track will be allowed to return to the circuit and have their tickets honored.
