The Verizon IndyCar Series announced their 2018 schedule on Thursday. The season once again comprises of 17 races beginning with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg on March 11.

Watkins Glen, a favourite among fans and drivers alike which returned to the calendar for last season as a replacement for the failed event in Boston has itself been replaced by Portland.

Speaking about the schedule, CEO of Hulman and Co, the parent company of the Verizon IndyCar Series, Mark Miles commented by saying:

The strength and consistency of the Verizon IndyCar Series’ 2018 schedule is something all of us should be proud of, “We’re also looking forward to continuing the upward trend of the series through the introduction of the universal aero kits, which testing has shown to be an exciting product

The race in Portland will be run by Green Savoree Promotions and speaking about the event, Miles said

INDYCAR couldn’t be more excited to again race in front of one of our strongest fan bases,” “Portland International Raceway has produced thrilling road racing throughout Indy car history – the 1997 finish still stands as the record for the closest finish on a road or street course – and the timing of our return couldn’t be better given the bold new look our cars will have in 2018. We expect this will be a show fans won’t want to miss.”

Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler commented by saying:

INDYCAR racing brings excitement and thrills to a city and to race spectators. “The return of INDYCAR racing to Portland will give us terrific international exposure, a great deal of revenue, new jobs and an exciting experience for race fans”

Phoenix will be the second stop on the schedule and has been rebranded as ISM Raceway and speaking about their place on the schedule, Bryan Sperber, president of Phoenix Raceway commented by saying:

We’re thrilled that the Verizon IndyCar Series Phoenix Grand Prix will return to April 6 and 7 under the lights.

“Our race fans will be treated to the stars of the IndyCar Series racing at record speed at Phoenix at a time of year that delivers chamber of commerce weather.”

The 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil takes place on May 27 with the Belle Isle Grand Prix at Belle Isle Raceway a week later on June 2 and 3.

The season will conclude on September 16 with the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. The schedule in full can be found at the following link:
