Verizon Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Chevrolet has had a fantastic season, from missing the opening race at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg the Australian has fought back and has won three races this season.
Power’s latest race win came last weekend at the Honda Indy Toronto whee he led a Penske 1-2 finish with Helio Castroneves ending the race in second place.
Power has now closed the gap to just 47 points to series points leader and team mate Simon Pagenaud who has also taken three victories so far in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series.
Power has taken wins at the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit race 2, the Kohler Grand Prix at Road America and last weekend in Canada. Speaking about the championship he stated:
Getting close, that’s good, It’s good to get this momentum for the team going forward for the rest of the championship. Five (races) to go, all good tracks for me. If we can close that gap going into (the season-ending GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma in September), we can do this, we can win this championship, absolutely.
The season finale GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma will be a double points race and should Simon Pagenaud endure a tough race in any of the final five races it will blow the championship wide open.
Speaking about his race, Power stated:
The team called me in just at the last minute. Perfect timing, I can’t tell you how many times it has gone the opposite way for me at this place and many other places. But I was so stoked to see yellow lights as I was going into pit lane. It’s not often you catch a yellow like that.
