The Verizon IndyCar Series championship is set for a thrilling conclusion in 2017, with just one race remaining, Josef Newgarden leads Scott Dixon by just three points.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves and reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud are also still in the running for the championship.

The final race of the year the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma counts for double points and it is the twelvieth season in succession that the championship has been decided in the final race.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden in his first season with The Captain has been in contention all year since moving across from Ed Carpenter Racing. The Tennessee native has gelled really well with his crew and is working extremely well with Team Penske President Tim Cindric.

Scott Dixon is aiming to win his fifth Astor Cup with Chip Ganassi Racing and with Mike Hull calling the races for him their experience could be key to success in Sonoma.
