Williams Martini Racing deputy team principal Claire Williams has for the first time admitted that re-hiring 2009 world champion Jenson Button for the 2017 season is an attractive option however maintains that the Grove based outfit are happy with the current pairing of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas.

Button who made his Formula One debut with Williams in the year 2000 is out of contract with McLaren at the end of the season with the Woking based outfit evaluating the possibility of promoting Stoffel Vandoorne to second driver alongside Fernando Alonso in 2017.

Felipe Massa is out of contract at Williams at the end of this season however it is understood that the Grove based outfit have an option on his team mate Valtteri Bottas for 2017.

A lot will depend on what Ferrari do with Kimi Raikkonen as the Finn is out of contract at the end of the year and although the Iceman has expressed a desire to stay with the team next season it is unclear whether the team want to keep him, it is no secret that the Prancing Horse was chasing Max Verstappen until Red Bull extended his contract.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the prospect of signing Button, Claire Williams said:

We are talking to them and we are having other conversations with other drivers in the paddock to see what other opportunities there are. ‘Button back at Williams’ is a great headline. He started his career here, he’s a world champion and extremely intelligent when it comes to building a team around him and helping the engineering side develop the car.

Williams is unsure whether or not Button is available next season and refused to say whether or not he is on the teams list for next season.
