Williams Martini Racing Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams has revealed that they are interested in signing 2009 world champion Jenson Button for 2017.
Williams has said however that they will not wait for Button who made his debut with the Grove based outfit in the year 2000 to decide what he wants to do next season. Button could be key to the driver market in 2017 as his current contract with McLaren Honda up at the end of the season.
Speaking to the Press Association Sport Williams stated:
It would be a great story, but he [Button] has to make the right choice for him, and we have to make the right choice for the team, He is a great talent in the car, but also outside of the car and we need a driver like him. We will own our driver line-up decision, and I am not sat here waiting for Ron Dennis to make his decision or for Jenson to make his decision.
Williams also revealed that Button is not the only driver that they are talking too. They are also interested in signing Sergio Perez from Force India but they would only consider him if the Mexican is available however it is understood that Force India team principal and managing director, Dr Vijay Mallya is hoping to retain both Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez for next season.
